For Immediate Release – Mattoon Fire Department
The Mattoon Fire Department responded to a fire located at LSC Communications on Tuesday evening January 23, 2019 at 2124 hours. Upon arrival, fire crews observed medium smoke from the interior of the building. Recon crews reported the fire was in the industrial baler and industrial shredder.
Fire crews worked to extinguish these fires. Overhaul activities were very labor intensive as the paper bales had to be moved out by hand from the baler in order to get to the smoldering fires.
The cause of the fire is equipment malfunction.
The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Charleston Fire Department. Fire department personnel cleared the scene at 0013 hours.
