
Thursday, February 18, 2021, Ed Dowd, Executive Director of the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce was a guest on 101.3 WMCI. Here is a brief description of what he covered during the interview:
- Scott Eggleston the owner of Slumberland Furniture was awarded the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for 2020. Since moving his family to Mattoon 8 years ago he has developed, contributed to and supported an incredible amount of community support initiatives. Some of which include:
- Through his ownership of Slumberland they have partnered with many local not for profits, church groups and school counselors to identify children who don’t have access to basic sleep accommodations. They have provided over 500 free beds, sheets and blankets to these children throughout the community in the last 8 years.
- In August of 2020,Scott organized a relief drive and drove his furniture truck full of emergency supplies to citizens devastated by a major storm in Cedar Rapids Iowa. The storm had winds as high as 140 mph and many parts of the city were without power for up to two weeks.
- Scott serves or has served with the Mattoon Rotary Club, The Mattoon Area Family YMCA Board, the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce as Board President, Mattoon in Motion, the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation Board and as a ClassE mentor to name a few.
- As Chamber President Scott was the driving force in the development of the Mattoon Emerging Leaders, (MEL), a group of future local leaders ranging in age from 21 to 40.
- A big shout out to all the City, County and State employees who did a great job working around the clock to get the roads cleared so residents could get out and businesses could open and serve customers. To take on and move 11 plus inches of blowing and drifting snow in sub-zero temperatures was quite an accomplishment.
