Sen. Bailey stands in support of new legislation to support law enforcement, hold violent criminals more accountable
Springfield, IL – State Senator Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) joined with several other Senate Republicans and members of law enforcement in the Illinois State Capitol Rotunda Tuesday to unveil a newly filed legislative package designed to support law enforcement and target violent crime.
“The brave men and women of our law enforcement community are under attack from violent criminals, as well as the recent criminal justice overhaul, making their jobs tougher,” said Sen. Bailey. “Too many law enforcement families lost a loved one last year or had one severely injured because Democrats ignored the need to take swift action to empower police and take on violent criminals.”
The newly updated legislative package includes a “Fund the Police Grant Act,” which would provide targeted grants to assist law enforcement, provide additional training, and purchase much-needed equipment, including body cameras.
“We shouldn’t be defunding police. We need more support to defend our police by providing officers and prosecutors the tools they need to get violent criminals off the streets and out of our communities. If this current administration has done anything, it has taken the ‘public’ out of public safety and out of taxpayer’s hands through an atrocious anti-police packaged called the ‘SAFE-T Act.’ Because of that, there is an average 20% vacancy rate in law enforcement positions across our state and Chicago is on track to lose 900 officers.”
This legislative package also contains bills to keep violent offenders off of the street, help stop the flow of illegal guns to criminals, take serious action against carjacking, provide mental health treatment to detainees, and repeal the dangerous bail provisions of the anti-police “SAFE-T Act.”
