Schmitz Vaults into Principal Post at Carl Sandburg Elementary School
CHARLESTON, IL – Abigail Schmitz of Charleston, Illinois will assume the position of Carl Sandburg Elementary School Principal for the Charleston Community Unit School District #1 effective July 1, 2022. The Board approved Schmitz at its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Wednesday evening.
Currently serving as Assistant Principal at Carl Sandburg Elementary School, Schmitz brings a variety of experiences and a leadership style that will support the needs of Carl Sandburg Elementary School.
Previously, Schmitz served the students of Charleston as a teacher and coach. She looks forward to this new educational leadership role in the Charleston schools. “I am looking forward to beginning this new challenge in our school district,” Schmitz said. “I am grateful to have this opportunity and look forward to finishing this school year strong and working with our staff to continue to bring great services to our students at Carl Sandburg.”
A native of Northbrook, Illinois, Abigail graduated from Glenbrook North High School and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in 2013, a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education in 2017, and a Master’s in Educational Leadership in 2020, all from Eastern Illinois University. Abigail served as an English language arts and reading teacher at Charleston Middle School from 2014 to 2020. During those years, she also coached track and field and cheerleading, and served as student council sponsor. She has experience as a Team Leader at CMS, a Competency Based Education pilot teacher, and has served on multiple advisory, RtI, interview, and Veteran’s Day committees. She has co-taught students with special emotional and behavioral needs. She has also served as a camp director for children among the kindergarten and 1st grades.
Abigail currently makes her home in Charleston. Please welcome Ms. Abigail Schmitz as the new Carl Sandburg Elementary School Principal.
