Illinois State Police Investigate In-Custody Death
Springfield, IL – On Sunday, June 27, 2021, Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Zone 4 was requested to investigate an in-custody death at the Sangamon County Jail in Springfield.
During the incident, Sangamon County Correctional Staff attempted to provide medical attention to Sangamon County Jail inmate Bobby Joe Jimerson, a 62-year-old male from Springfield, Illinois who collapsed while walking to his bond hearing at the Sangamon Count Jail complex. Jail staff immediately provided emergency medical care to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Mr. Jimerson was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
An autopsy was conducted on Monday, June 28, 2021, in Springfield, Illinois. Preliminary findings indicate Jimerson showed significant natural disease, and there was no evidence of injury or trauma. A complete autopsy report is pending toxicology results which may take several weeks.
ISP DCI Zone 4 is conducting the death investigation. No additional information will be provided at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation.
