Congresswoman Mary Miller: Biden Abandons Chicago to a Summer of Crime
WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden is expected to visit picturesque Crystal Lake, IL tomorrow, but Congresswoman Mary Miller (IL-15) is encouraging Biden to visit Chicago with a plan to reverse the reckless Democrat policies that led to the most violent weekend in the history of the city.
Biden’s visit will bypass Chicago after the city’s most violent weekend on record, as more than 104 people were shot with 19 fatalities. At least 13 of the shooting victims were children, and a police commander and sergeant were also shot.
“Under Democrat leadership, Chicago has become a war zone with no relief in sight,” Miller said. “Instead of sending a clear message that he cares about the safety of the residents of Chicago, Biden, like Lightfoot and Pritzker, would rather blame law-abiding gun owners in Indiana and in downstate Illinois.”
“Taking away guns from honest people is not going to stop criminals, but the aggressive prosecution of violent crimes and an increased police presence will.”
Miller said Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Gov. JB Pritzker are sending a clear message that they stand with people who commit crimes, not their victims. Pritzker recently signed legislation ending bail, which will make Illinois a catch and release state for criminals. Lightfoot issued guidance ending foot pursuits for criminals, sending a message that if you commit a crime and run, you will not be followed.
“President Biden and the Democrats want to defund the police, take away your Second Amendment right to self-defense, and then watch as crime skyrockets in cities like Chicago.”
From January through June, 363 officers have left the Chicago Police Department, and another 56 are expected to retire this month. This is detrimental to a city that on average sees somebody shot roughly every two hours.
“Chicago is taking a soft on crime approach, and officers are retiring from the police force in Chicago at a record pace. All of this is adding up to uncontrollable violence. It is time for our leaders to stop pandering to far-left interest groups and put the needs of innocent people first. The lives of the residents of America’s third largest city depend on it.”
